TEKTON Straight Probe (1/16 in. x 3 Inch) PNH21111
The Tekton Probe is made from AISI 8650 steel hardened to 50-54 HRC and bent to shape. The probe tapers to a 0.375 inch long straight tip that's 0.06 inches in diameter and fits into 1/16 inch holes. Two "wings" on the base of the blade help it resist being twisted or pulled out of the handle. The classic square handle is long and slender with contoured sides for overall versatility and maneuverability. The AISI 8650 steel shaft is made from a strong Ni-Cr-Mo alloy that's hardened to 50-54 HRC. The handle is made from glass-reinforced nylon that's resistant to fuels, oils, and chemicals. Our family of mini pry bar, pick, and hook products is made entirely in Michigan with only USA-sourced materials. Machining, bending, coining, handle molding, and press-fitting the handle and blade take place at our Grand Rapids, Michigan manufacturing facility.

Locate Septic Tank Risers
60 minutesBegin by locating the septic tank access risers. These are typically large, circular openings that extend from the tank lid to ground level. You may need to probe the ground with a rod or shovel to find them, especially if they are buried. Once located, carefully excavate the soil around the risers to expose the lids.

15 minutesOnce the risers are exposed, carefully examine the lids and the riser pipes themselves. Look for any visible cracks, breaks, or signs of deterioration. Ensure the lids fit snugly and are properly sealed to prevent surface water from entering the tank. Check for any evidence of leaks around the connection points.

20 minutesUsing appropriate tools, carefully remove the lids from the septic tank risers. Lids can be heavy and may be sealed. Be prepared to lift them safely, and have a place to set them where they won't be a hazard. If the lids are secured with screws or bolts, remove them first.

30 minutesWith the lids removed, use a flashlight to inspect the interior of the septic tank. Observe the layers of scum (solids floating on top) and sludge (solids settled at the bottom). The tank generally needs pumping when the scum layer is within 6 inches of the bottom of the outlet baffle or the sludge layer is within 12 inches of the top of the tank. You can use a measuring stick or a long pole to gauge these levels. Also, look for any signs of inflow or outflow pipe blockages.

15 minutesIf your inspection indicates that the scum or sludge levels have reached the recommended pumping thresholds, it's time to schedule a professional septic tank pumping service. Contact a reputable septic service company. They will have the specialized equipment to safely and effectively remove the accumulated solids and liquids from your tank.

30 minutesAfter the tank has been pumped (or if pumping was not required but you have opened the tank), clean the inside of the riser pipes and the septic tank lids. Use a hose and a stiff brush to remove any accumulated sludge, scum, or debris. Ensure the sealing surfaces on both the lid and the riser are clean and free of obstructions.

15 minutesOnce the risers and lids are clean and dry, carefully place the lids back onto the septic tank risers. Ensure they are properly aligned and seated. If your lids have screws or bolts, reinsert and tighten them securely to create a tight seal. Check that the lids are flush with the ground or intended surface.

45 minutesAfter the lids are securely in place, carefully backfill the excavated area around the septic tank risers. Use the soil that was removed, and compact it in layers to prevent settling. Ensure the ground surface is graded away from the risers to prevent water pooling.

5 minutesThe best maintenance is preventative. Be mindful of what goes into your septic system. Avoid flushing non-biodegradable items such as feminine hygiene products, paper towels, diapers, or excessive amounts of toilet paper. Limit the disposal of grease, coffee grounds, and harsh chemicals down drains, as these can disrupt the natural bacterial balance within the tank and clog pipes.

Exposure to dangerous septic gases or risk of falling into the tank.
Solution: If you smell strong, foul odors (like rotten eggs) or feel dizzy, immediately move away from the tank opening. Never work alone near an open septic tank. Use a long pole or stick with a hook to retrieve any dropped items; do not reach in with your hand. If you must lean close, ensure good ventilation and have a buddy spot you.
Prevention: Always work with another person. Ensure good ventilation by opening the tank for a few minutes before leaning over. Never enter a septic tank. Be aware that hydrogen sulfide, a common septic gas, can quickly numb your sense of smell, making you unaware of its presence.
Difficulty locating the septic tank or its access risers, or digging in the wrong place.
Solution: Consult your home's 'as-built' plans (often available from your local health department or building permit office) for a diagram of your system. Use your TEKTON Straight Probe by gently pushing it into the ground in a grid pattern in the suspected area. When you hit something hard and flat, carefully dig around it with your shovel to verify it's the septic tank or riser lid.
Prevention: Keep a copy of your septic system's layout plans readily accessible. After successfully locating the risers, consider marking their positions with GPS on your phone or by placing permanent, visible markers above ground (like a decorative garden stone) to make future access easier.
Misinterpreting the levels of scum and sludge during interior inspection, leading to incorrect decisions about pumping.
Solution: Use your measuring pole and flashlight to determine the thickness of the scum layer (floating on top) and the sludge layer (at the bottom). As a general rule, if the scum layer is thicker than 6 inches or the sludge layer is thicker than 12 inches (or if the combined scum and sludge layers occupy more than 30% of the tank's liquid depth), it's time to pump. When in doubt, take photos and consult a septic professional.
Prevention: Before inspection, research the typical scum and sludge accumulation rates for your tank size and household usage. Keep a detailed record of previous pumping dates and the observed levels to track accumulation over time.
Septic tank lids are stuck, extremely heavy, or the bolts are seized, making them difficult or dangerous to open.
Solution: If bolts are seized, apply a penetrating oil and let it soak for an hour before attempting to loosen them with your ratcheting wrench. For stuck lids, use the Stanley Pry Bar to gently lift and separate the lid from the riser edge. If a lid is too heavy to lift safely alone, recruit a strong helper. Never use excessive force that could cause injury or damage the lid or riser.
Prevention: When reinstalling lids, clean the threads of the bolts and lightly coat them with anti-seize lubricant or grease. Ensure the lids are properly seated and sealed to prevent dirt and water from cementing them in place.
Damaged or cracked septic tank lids or risers found during inspection.
Solution: Minor cracks in concrete lids might be temporarily repaired with hydraulic cement, but any significant damage, especially to plastic risers or larger cracks in concrete, necessitates replacement. Contact a septic professional immediately to get the correct replacement parts and ensure they are installed safely and securely.
Prevention: Avoid driving vehicles or heavy equipment over the septic tank and drainfield area. Ensure lids are properly sealed and covered with a sufficient layer of soil to protect them from environmental damage and accidental impact.
Improperly re-sealing the septic tank lids after inspection or pumping, leading to odors, debris entering the tank, or safety hazards (cross-threading bolts or overtightening).
Solution: Thoroughly clean any debris from the lid and riser sealing surfaces. Carefully align the lid with the riser opening. Start tightening the bolts by hand first to ensure they engage correctly and prevent cross-threading. Once finger-tight, use your ratcheting wrench to snug them down, but do not overtighten, as this can crack plastic lids or risers. Ensure any sealing gaskets are properly seated.
Prevention: Before removing the lids, take a photo of how they are seated and secured. If the existing seal is old or damaged, consider replacing it with a new one when you reinstall the lid. Apply a small amount of anti-seize lubricant to the bolt threads for easier future removal.
Signs of drainfield failure are observed, such as standing water, overly lush green grass, or foul odors in the drainfield area.
Solution: If you notice any of these symptoms, immediately reduce your household water usage as much as possible. Avoid flushing anything non-biodegradable down the toilet. Contact a qualified septic professional for an immediate assessment of your drainfield system. Early intervention can sometimes prevent the need for a full drainfield replacement.
Prevention: Conserve water throughout your home to reduce the load on the drainfield. Avoid pouring grease, harsh chemicals, or non-biodegradable items down your drains. Keep large trees and shrubs away from the drainfield area to prevent root intrusion, and never drive vehicles or place heavy objects over the drainfield to prevent soil compaction.
