Place a bucket or towels underneath the toilet tank to catch any residual water. Unscrew the water supply line connector from the bottom of the old fill valve. If it's too tight to loosen by hand, use tongue-and-groove pliers to get it started, then finish by hand. Next, unscrew and remove the plastic locknut that holds the fill valve in place. Again, use pliers if necessary to start it. Once the locknut is off, go back to the inside of the tank, detach the refill tube from the overflow pipe, and lift the entire old fill valve assembly out of the tank.

Water will drain from the fill valve hole once it's removed, so have a bucket and towels ready.
The supply line and locknut should only be hand-tight. Use pliers gently and only to get them started if they are stuck.

For this next part, lay a few towels on the floor and it can get messy, and it's good to have a few towels lay in there to catch any water or be able to wipe it up as needed. Your supply line should only be hand tight, so try that first. If it's too tight to loosen by hand, then use a set of tongue and groove joint pliers to get it started, and then finish up by hand. All right, it's good to clean up as you go, and next, we will remove the old filled out walk nuts. Use the same process we did with the supply line, in my case, I didn't need the pliers to get it started, and then I was able to finish by hand. Now we'll remove the old refill tube hose. When we remove the old fill valve, any remaining water in there will pour out that hole. I'll try to catch it in the bucket, but you want to have a couple towels laying around also. The main water supply line gets in the way and usually will allow you to get your bucket perfectly under the hole. And yep, that was a mess, but it is an easy clean up.
