Step 2 · Loosen the P-Trap Slip Nuts

This is the step people usually slow down on. Go finger-tight first, then a quarter turn. No rush — replay the clip whenever it helps.

Identify the P-trap, which is the U-shaped pipe under the sink. It is connected at two points by large threaded nuts, known as slip nuts. One connects to the vertical pipe coming down from the sink drain (the tailpiece), and the other connects to the horizontal pipe going into the wall (the trap arm). Grasp one of the slip nuts with a pair of channel-lock pliers. Turn the nut counter-clockwise ('lefty-loosey') to break it free. It may require firm, steady pressure. Once it's loose, stop. Repeat this process for the second slip nut. Do not unscrew them completely at this stage.
