Step 1 · Prepare Workspace and Gear Up

Before starting, protect yourself and the surrounding area. Put on safety glasses to shield your eyes from potential splashback and waterproof gloves to keep your hands clean. Lay down several old towels on the floor around the drain cleanout opening to absorb any water that may spill. Most importantly, identify and block any other nearby drains that connect to the same line, such as floor drains or basement sinks. Stuff rags tightly into these openings to prevent pressurized water and waste from backing up into your home. A bucket should be kept nearby to catch water from the hose upon removal.
