Step 3 · Wrap the Threads with Tension

Maintain light tension on the tape as you wrap it around the fitting in a clockwise direction. The tension is key to ensuring the tape conforms tightly into the root of the threads. Overlap each successive layer by approximately one-half the width of the tape. For standard water pipe fittings (1/2-inch to 3/4-inch), apply 3 to 5 complete revolutions around the fitting. The tape should be snug and clearly define the shape of the threads beneath it. Do not wrap so much tape that it becomes difficult to thread the fittings together.
