Step 1 · Safety First and Roof Access

This is the step most people slow down on. Take it one move at a time — there’s no rush, and you can rewind the clip as many times as you need.

The most critical step is ensuring your safety. Select a sturdy extension ladder and place it on firm, level ground. Extend it at least 3 feet above the roofline. Ensure the angle is correct: for every 4 feet of height, the base should be 1 foot away from the wall. Before climbing, put on heavy-duty work gloves and non-slip shoes. Have a spotter at the base of the ladder at all times. If the roof has a significant pitch, a safety harness is strongly recommended. Carry your tools up in a bucket or tool bag to keep your hands free for climbing.
