Step 3 · Cut Out the Damaged Section

This is the step people usually slow down on. Go finger-tight first, then a quarter turn. No rush — replay the clip whenever it helps.

Position a tubing cutter on one of your marks. Tighten the knob until the cutting wheel makes firm contact with the pipe. Rotate the cutter around the pipe, tightening the knob slightly after each full rotation. Continue this process until the pipe is cut through. Repeat the process on the second mark to remove the damaged section. Use a rag to wipe away any water that spills out. A tubing cutter provides a much cleaner and squarer cut than a hacksaw, which is essential for a leak-proof compression fitting.
