Step 7 · Restore Water and Test the Repair

Once the coupling is securely tightened, it's time to test your work. Make sure all faucets you opened are closed. Go back to the main water shutoff valve and turn it on slowly (counter-clockwise). A slow turn prevents a sudden pressure surge, known as water hammer. Listen for any hissing sounds and carefully inspect the new coupling and its joints for any drips or leaks. Use a dry paper towel to wipe around the nuts; it will make even the smallest drop of water visible. If you see a leak, shut the water off again and try tightening the leaking nut slightly (about an eighth of a turn). If it still leaks, you may need to disassemble, re-clean, and reassemble the fitting.
