Step 5 · Plunge the Sink

This is the step people usually slow down on. Go finger-tight first, then a quarter turn. No rush — replay the clip whenever it helps.

If the disposal runs but water still won't drain, the clog is in the drainpipe. First, stop up the non-disposal side of the sink using a sink stopper or a wet rag, ensuring a tight seal. Fill the disposal side of the sink with 3-4 inches of water. Place a cup-style plunger over the disposal drain opening, ensuring a good seal. Vigorously pump the plunger up and down for 30-60 seconds. The pressure created should force the clog through the P-trap and down the main drain. If the water drains away, you've succeeded. If not, proceed to the next step.
