Step 6 · Clean the P-Trap

This is the step most people slow down on. Take it one move at a time — there’s no rush, and you can rewind the clip as many times as you need.

If plunging fails, the clog is likely lodged in the P-trap, the U-shaped section of pipe under the sink. Place a large bucket directly underneath the P-trap to catch water and sludge. Have several old towels ready. Using a pair of channel-lock pliers, carefully loosen the two large slip nuts that connect the P-trap to the sink's tailpiece and the wall pipe. Water will start to drain out. Once the nuts are loose enough, you can unscrew them by hand. Remove the P-trap section and empty its contents into the bucket. Clean the inside of the trap thoroughly with a brush or a rag. Also, check the horizontal pipe going into the wall for any obstructions.
