Step 1 · Identify the Frozen Pipe and Open the Faucet

This is the step people usually slow down on. Go finger-tight first, then a quarter turn. No rush — replay the clip whenever it helps.

First, confirm which pipe is frozen. Go through the house and turn on each faucet one by one. If a faucet produces no water or only a small trickle, you've found the affected line. Now, trace that pipe back from the faucet to its source. The frozen section will typically be in the coldest, most exposed area, such as along an exterior wall in the basement or in a crawlspace. The pipe may have frost on its exterior or feel significantly colder than surrounding pipes. Once located, go to the affected faucet and turn it fully to the 'on' position for both hot and cold. This is a critical step as it relieves pressure that builds up between the blockage and the faucet and gives the melting ice and steam a path to escape.
