Once you have confirmed that the pipe is fully thawed and there are no leaks, you can implement long-term prevention. The most effective method for exposed pipes is to insulate them. Purchase foam pipe sleeves that match the diameter of your pipes. Cut the sleeves to the required length with a utility knife and wrap them around the sections of pipe that run through unheated areas. Use duct tape to secure the seams of the insulation and to cover any joints or fittings. For added protection, identify and seal any air leaks from the outside into your basement or crawlspace using caulk or spray foam, paying special attention to areas where pipes penetrate the foundation.
