Step 3 · Light the Gas Water Heater Pilot

This is the step people usually slow down on. Go finger-tight first, then a quarter turn. No rush — replay the clip whenever it helps.

Using a long lighter or match, carefully light the pilot light while holding down the control knob (or pressing the igniter button). Hold the knob down for 30-60 seconds after ignition to allow the thermocouple to heat up. If the pilot doesn't light, repeat the process and check for obstructions.
