Step 1 · Safety First: Check for Gas Leaks
Before beginning any work or inspection, the most critical first step is to check for a gas leak. Approach the water heater and carefully smell the air around the unit, especially near the bottom where the gas line connects. Natural gas is odorized with a substance called mercaptan, which gives it a distinct 'rotten egg' or sulfur smell. If you detect this odor, do not proceed. Immediately evacuate the house, do not use any phones or light switches inside, and call your gas utility company's emergency number from a neighbor's house or your cell phone outside.
