Step 6 · Call a Professional Plumber

If you have successfully completed all the previous steps and the water heater still fails to operate, or if you were uncomfortable performing any of them, the problem is likely more complex. Issues like a faulty gas control valve, a clogged vent pipe, or a malfunctioning main burner are best left to a professional. Contact a licensed and insured plumber or a gas appliance technician. Describe the symptoms and the steps you have already taken. This will help them diagnose the problem more quickly. Do not attempt to repair or replace the main gas control valve yourself.
