Step 4 · Inspect and Clean the Thermocouple

This is the step most people slow down on. Take it one move at a time — there’s no rush, and you can rewind the clip as many times as you need.

If the pilot lights but extinguishes as soon as you release the pilot knob, the thermocouple is the likely culprit. Turn the gas control knob to 'OFF' and shut off the gas supply line valve. The thermocouple is a thin copper tube running from the gas control valve to the pilot light assembly. Its job is to sense the flame and shut off the gas if the pilot goes out. Check that its tip is positioned directly in the pilot flame and that it isn't covered in soot. If it is, you can gently clean the tip with a piece of fine-grit sandpaper or the rough side of a sponge to remove carbon buildup. Reposition it if necessary and attempt to relight the pilot.
