Step 3 · Locate and Remove the Cartridge or Valve Stem

Locate the cartridge or valve stem – the part that controls water flow and temperature. Once the handles are removed, you should see it. You may need to remove an escutcheon (decorative sleeve) to access it. Depending on the faucet type, a retaining clip or nut may secure the cartridge/stem; remove this with pliers or the appropriate wrench.
