Step 3 · Remove the Retaining Clip or Nut

This is the step people usually slow down on. Go finger-tight first, then a quarter turn. No rush — replay the clip whenever it helps.

With the escutcheon removed, you'll find the valve cartridge held in place by a retaining clip or nut. Use the appropriate tool—pliers or a wrench—to carefully remove this fastener. Be gentle to avoid damaging the valve body.
