Step 2 · Inspect and Clean the Stopper

This is the step people usually slow down on. Go finger-tight first, then a quarter turn. No rush — replay the clip whenever it helps.

Before making any mechanical adjustments, it's crucial to rule out a simple clog. Look under the sink and locate the pivot rod—a horizontal rod entering the side of the drain tailpiece, held by a retaining nut. Using channel-lock pliers or your fingers, carefully loosen this nut (turn counter-clockwise). Do not remove it completely. Gently pull the pivot rod out just enough to disengage it from the stopper. Now, from above the sink, lift the pop-up stopper straight out of the drain opening. Clean it thoroughly, removing all hair, soap scum, and debris. A paper towel or a small brush works well. Once clean, re-insert the stopper, ensuring the hole in its base faces the back of the sink. Re-engage the pivot rod and hand-tighten the retaining nut.
