Step 3 · Layout and Excavate Footings

Using stakes and string lines, accurately lay out the perimeter of the deck and the exact positions for each footing based on your design. Use a post hole digger or auger to excavate holes for the footings. The depth of these holes must extend below the local frost line to prevent heaving. Ensure the holes are wide enough to accommodate the concrete forms and provide adequate support.
